Taking care of your African Urchin

We are all breakable. We will all disintegrate into the world. As robust as we are, we are fragile. Your urchin is no different: the shell is, by design, strong and durable.
Yet, again by design, it is perishable, its lifespan simply a cycle. Once an African Urchin is yours, it is utterly in your care. Like us, it is more likely to look good, if you understand its’ strengths and weaknesses, apply a little common sense, and practice care-filled rituals with the intention of longevity. Care is no secret – it is respect, while negligence hastens the inevitable cycle of decay.
By creating this jewel we mark time for the sake of beauty – the lifespan of your African Urchin is up to you.

Cleaning your African Urchin

A miracle of nature, sea urchin shells are remarkable for their sensational textured pattern and sculptural silhouette. This is their magic, and it requires meticulous craftsmanship to achieve a plating of precious metal thin enough to retain the exquisite definition of the shell.
All shells can be gently polished with a soft
non-abrasive cloth
, but overly vigorous rubbing will begin to rub away the plating.

As the silver urchins are oxidised to create an antique finish, it is not necessary to clean them. However, as a natural process, silver continues to oxidise, and should you desire to shine up your silver African Urchin as it naturally darkens over time, a gentle polish or mild
clean will do the trick.

Cleaning your African Urchin by giving it a gentle wash is simple, and suitable for all metal types.

Mix a mild solution of any mild kitchen dishwashing detergent [e.g. Sunlight Soap (SA), Joy (US), Fairy Liquid (UK)] with lukewarm water. Use a soft-bristled baby’s toothbrush to lightly rub the African Urchin,
and to get into the nooks and crannies of stone settings. Once clean, rinse under a stream of tap water, and then softly dry your African Urchin with a clean,
lint-free cloth.

Good rituals to preserve your
African Urchin

When you’re not wearing your African Urchin safe keep it by storing it in its protective tin.

It’s a good idea to take off your African Urchin when you’re bathing, showering or washing the dishes – over time detergents and bath products will leave a dull film on your jewellery.

Apply make-up, hair products and perfume first, and allow a little time for these to dry before putting on your African Urchin. Chemicals in beauty products can discolour jewellery.
